Weekend Review

I had a great visit with my dad!  Unfortunately my mom couldn’t make it; they had two foster children arrive over the weekend, so I completely understand.  She was really upset that she couldn’t make the trip, so she is coming to see me sometime later this month!

Whenever my parents arrive we end up going out for dinner together and spending the day out of the house.  My parents NEVER let me pay for anything when they are here either.  I always take them out for at least one meal and explain before hand that I am paying.  It’s usually a “oh no, I got it, dear” conversation, until I talk them into allowing me to pay.  And this weekend was no different.

I ended up spending $24 to get my tire repaired (it had a slow leak).  And $32 when H and I took my dad out for breakfast on Saturday.

My dad paid for one dinner out, a couple of coffee’s for us and he pitched in $20 for gas.  He is always so generous!

We had a lot of conversations about money.  Plans about his retirement (he turns 60 this year), how much H and I spend/save each month and how much the wedding is going to cost.  It’s always great to hear his point of view about money, because he is a walking success story!

As we were driving to the airport he leans over and asks…

Dad: “Have you ever watched that show about money, you know the one, where people get themselves into such a deep hole?”

Me: “Uhh… Til Debt Do Us Part?”

Dad: “Yeah, yeah, that’s the one. Man, people are nuts. They just want it all. Never satisfied. Just a slave to their debt”

Me: “I know what you mean! I love that show!” * thinking to myself: maybe I should tell him about the blog * “And you’re right, people ARE nuts!”

It was quite funny.  I never did tell him about the blog.  Not yet anyway!

Glad you had such a great visit with your dad. :)

My mom is driving in today to see the house and stay with us for a few days. Should be fun!

My dad just found out about my blogging — I think yours would be happy for you, too. =)

I find it tough to talk to my (retired) folks about my financial health (either way). They’re always very generous, but, hey, I’m still working, and they’re not. I always feel guilty accepting their money, even for incidentals.

Bobby: I can understand where you’re coming from with the guilt. My dad told me not to feel guilty, but to be happy, as he shoves $20 into my hand. lol. :p

So glad that you had a nice visit with your dad. I was just thinking the other day how much I want to see mine again…it’s been almost two years now!
And hopefully you will get to see your mom soon too. They sound like wonderful people, especially to take in foster children at last minute!
Awesome role models, no wonder you turned out so well. :-)

That’s great that you saw your dad and were able to have some good conversations with him! Nice that your dad has seen the show as well. I always like talking with my mom about money too. Hopefully your mom is able to visit soon :)

Glad you had a great visit. My parents don’t know about my blog either and I don’t know that MY dad would approve.

My parents always pay for stuff when we are together. I don’t know that it will ever change. They are pretty well off and know that my salary isn’t that spectacular. I don’t know that they would ever let me pay. And I don’t know that I feel all that bad about it…

Wow, it’s great how close you guys are. I would NEVER tell my parents about my blog, or any other blogs I have/had. I didn’t know that they foster kids too – they sound like great people.

I also like to try and treat my parents from time to time, it’s hard though as they always try and insist on paying but i’m working so i enjoy treating them, they’ve done so much for me over the years! Like you I just tell them up front that this one is our treat, then we take them somewhere extra nice as we don’t get to do it too often!

Rubee: I have been trying to comment on your blog forever, but it won’t let me! I hope you get this! :)

My dad doesn’t know the first thing about computers. All he asked me when I told him about my online business was if it was legal, and if it was moral. After I answered yes, and yes, he said that’s all he wants to know.

He’s also VERY good with money. I must have missed that gene, as it took me a while to get my finances under control, lol
