Christmas time at my house!

As I mentioned yesterday, here are pictures of my apartment in all its Christmas glory!

Here is my living / work out room (I wish I had more space! That elliptical needs a new home).

And here is our cute, lil’ tree!  It’s a fake 2 footer.  My condo building does not allow real trees.   I purchased the tree from the Salvation Army thrift store for $12.  The glass balls on the tree were purchased for $4 and the LED lights for $8.  And H made the star!  ;)

I obtained all of these decorations years ago.  None of them were purchased new.  They were either purchased from a thrift store or given to me.

That candy dish is sure looking lonely!  Maybe I need to fill that up!  I purchased the red candle from Ikea for $2.  Everything else was purchased second hand.

Decorating on the cheap!

  • A lot of people buy new decorations each year and donate their “old” stuff.  Check out your local thrift stores before buying new!  You can pick up some cute things for half the cost.
  • If you have children let them make handmade decorations.  Snow flakes, paper garland, tree ornaments etc..

I use to have a real tree, in my old house.  So I have some bigger balls that do not fit onto my current fake tree.   I took them and placed them into this glass jar, just to add some Christmas colors to my bookshelf – and it worked nicely.

I have tons of wrapping paper that was given to me years ago!  I usually end up wrapping any pictures that I have hanging on my wall.  I just add a bow and they look like hanging Christmas presents! ;)   It’s such an easy way to add to the Christmas theme.  This year I just wrapped one picture…

And here is what those cheap decorations look like in their place…  :D

We don’t have a single bit of Christmas decoration up. Neither of us had any, and we haven’t mustered up the energy to start up a collection. Not that we’d have space for it anyway. :( Oh well.

That nativity scene next to your present is soo cute!

My family has a bunch of Christmas stuff that we have accumulated over the years. We donated a bunch one year so we don’t have AS much, but it’s still more than enough. A lot of it was gifts or things we bought over the years. We usually end up getting one new thing per year. This year it was a Christmas tree with lights for outdoors. So pretty!

Your living room is really cute :)

We have a 4′ tree this year and it’s up and decorated. We have put lights at the front of the house so we don’t look like the only Grinch’s on the Block! So far we haven’t done much decorating…but I am going to make a Christmas centrepiece, with decorations and a vase, just like yours. Hopefully I will finish making it sometime soon. I think next year, Amy and I will go all out at our new home.

We’re of the buy it new and donate every year school of thought. In January, we box everything up and give it to our local woman’s shelter, and they use it the next year. Then they give the previous year’s decorations to an employee or a client. So we’re not frugal, but at least it doesn’t go into a landfill:) And, honestly, we spend about $50-$75 at Wal-Mart every year – it’s not as bad as it sounds. This is one area in which I just can’t bring myself to be frugal – it’s so much more fun to buy new every year than it is to pull dusty old stuff out of storage. But kudos to you for being much, much thriftier than me!

Looks nice! I also think a good way to decorate on the cheap is to think a year ahead. Go holiday shopping on December 26th and score all kinds of great stuff.

Are those Everybody Loves Raymond dvd’s?

Frugal Dreamer  on December 9th, 2009

GirlMakesCents: Yes, We have lights outside too (thanks for the reminder!). Next week I will take a picture of that, as well as my Kitchen! ;)

Judi: Thanks for commenting! Next year I want to make a centerpiece for our table, it’s not in the budget for this year!

LG: $50-$75 ain’t bad. Just think, you’re helping that woman’s shelter! I always oogle all the new Christmas decorations. A lot of it is very tempting! ;)

meinmillions: Good call on the 26th shopping! A lot of the new decorations is marked way down! :)

Wow. It looks SO pretty! I love the idea of using the old Christmas balls in a glass container. So elegant that way!

Looks great! I love throwing Christmas ornaments in bowls and jars and am planning to do some of that this week actually.

We have been really lucky, that almost all of our decorations have been given to us by our mothers, including our beautiful 7ft tree. Last year we bought 4 new strands of outdoor LED lights and this year we bought 3 new strands of LEDs for our tree. Other than the occassional ornament for the tree, we have spent very little money on our decorating.

I love yours, everything looks so pretty! I particularly like the top shelf of your bookshelves, the letters, the star, it is just perfect!

OMG I love it! So festive and simple! And wrapping picture frames? Another gorgeous touch! :D

I forgot to mention that your place looks really nice. It doesn’t really look like you live a frugal lifestyle buying most things second hand and everything!

My favorite is your decked out lamp post! Very cute!

Our family used to be a natural christmas tree family….but over the years we’ve drifted away from that. My aunt’s “christmas tree” this year is just a column she decorated with lights and garland. I love it!

I don’t want to fill my closets with christmas junk, but I definitely want to browse the after christmas sales this year. We’ll see.
