Sweet Party Mix Recipe

Yesterday I pulled out my Better Homes cookbook and wanted to bake something.  Something that didn’t include flour or chocolate and something easy.

I came across this recipe and it’s heavenly.  I didn’t follow the recipe entirely, so I will share with you what I did.

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups Cheerios cereal
  • 4 cups Shreddies cereal
  • 3 cups pretzel knots
  • 1 cup sliced almonds
  • ¾ cup brown sugar
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 3 tablespoons light-colored corn syrup
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

Directions:

In a large roasting pan combine Cheerios, Shreddies, pretzels and almonds; set aside.

In a medium saucepan combine brown sugar, butter and corn syrup.  Cook and stir over medium heat until mixture boils.  Continue boiling, without stirring, for 2 – 3 minutes.  Remove saucepan from heat; stir in baking soda.

Pour over cereal mixture; stir gently to coat.

Bake in a 300 degree oven for 15 minutes; stir mixture and bake for 5 minutes more.

After 20 minutes of baking, remove from oven.  Spread mixture on a large piece of buttered foil to cool.  Break into pieces.  Store in an airtight container.

YUM!!

It kind of tastes like caramel popcorn, but not as sweet.  And obviously not as chewy.  The recipe also suggested adding dried cranberries, blueberries or cherries.  We didn’t have any on hand, so I went without.

I love Better Homes and Gardens. They have helped me bake 12 days of cookies this year :)
